In image guided surgery (IGS) system, to begin with, we have to perform registration procedure, matching the 3D axis of the physical space with that of the image space organized by CT or MRI medical images. In this procedure, best transformation matrix for rotation, translation and scaling is obtained for some landmark points of each space through linear transformation and making the minimal root mean square (RMS) error. In this study, we designed a new fiducial marker to improve accuracy of registration and also to minimize the differences made by different users¡¯ registration skill. We measured the physical accuracy, called RMS error, to assess the new marker comparing with the commercially available ones. Using the new fiducial markers, the error improved by about two times (1.06 vs. 0.56 mm). The standard deviation of RMS error also decreased with the new fiducial markers (0.21 vs. 0.04 mm), suggesting improved inter-user differences during registration.
